Every morning at 5:00 AM, right after waking and before training, I spend five minutes on box breathing — the technique associated with Navy SEAL training, used to bring focus and calm under pressure.
The exact pattern
- Inhale for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
- Exhale for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
Repeat for five minutes. That’s the entire technique — no equipment, no app required, just counting.
Why I do it before training, not after
Doing this before training rather than after means I walk into the workout from a calm, focused state instead of a groggy one. It’s a five-minute reset between “just woke up” and “ready to train hard,” and it’s cheap enough — in time and effort — that skipping it has never made sense.
What it actually does for me
The value isn’t mystical. Controlled breathing at an even, deliberate pace is one of the simplest ways to shift out of a reactive, half-asleep state into something closer to calm alertness. I use it as the hinge point of my morning — the five minutes between waking up and actually starting the day.
This sits between waking at 4:50 AM and my workout routine. For the complete morning sequence, see My Morning Routine.
